Teinne is a project that began in early 2010 when singer and producer Tim Downey took his music in a new direction away from his former solo folk-rock material. The new sound is decidedly more beat-driven alternative-pop and reveals a much more ‘up-front’ attitude.
All of the sounds on Teinne’s debut EP ‘True Type’ have been either performed or programmed solely by Tim. The drum tracks have all been programmed which gives the recording a kind of dirty-electro vibe. This element is then married with filtered vocals for maximum muddiness.
Tim’s approach to writing this collection of songs was a kind of deconstruction of Blues music. The focus is really on rhythm and feel. Over the past few years, Tim has listened to heaps of Tom Waits and Beck – both of whom he cites as major influences on his writing. The idea is to allow the lyrics and the feel of the music to create a little world that the listener can inhabit.
Aside from music, Tim Downey is also obsessed with Typography – hence the title of the EP. True Type is actually a font format developed by Apple Computer in the 1980’s. As Tim was also ‘developed’ in the 1980’s, he feels a kind of affinity with this outline font… pretty geeky, but there you go. Tim also believes in ghosts. His song Hammer Head which is featured on the new EP tells the tale of a shark-ghost, haunting the deep waters of the ocean.
Tim currently lives in Hobart where ‘True Type’ was recorded in his home studio. Born and bred in Melbourne, Tim along with friends Pete Spark & Luke Richardson played around the city between 2005 and 2007 performing as “Tim Downey & The Little Souls”. It’s been quite a long hiatus but Tim Downey is now back (from the dead) as Teinne.
